Module 1 – Testicular Cancer
The past decade has seen significant progress in the treatment of malignant urothelial tumors through major advancements in both clinical and basic research. As part of strengthening cooperation between the various specialties involved in the management of these tumors and disseminating the latest developments among younger colleagues, the Hellenic Genitourinary Cancer Group (HGUCG) organizes an annual series of interactive lessons on uro-genital cancer. The courses are conducted in collaboration with the Young Greek Oncologists Group (ΟΝΕΟ), under the auspices of the Society of Pathologists of Oncology of Greece (ΕΟΠΕ). ΟΝΕΟ plays a critical role in the execution of these lessons with the participation of Messrs. Tsoukalas and Voulgaris on the Coordination Committee, which reviews the program and selects the young oncologists who present the cases that form the structure of the lessons.
On November 24, 2014, the 1st Lesson on "Testicular Cancer" was held at the Small Auditorium of Aretaieio Hospital. The event was accredited with 3 Continuing Medical Education (CME) points by the Panhellenic Medical Association. Participation was free. The lesson, lasting three hours, included two main sections. In the first section, Ms. Marina Gkiaouraki presented two cases related to: "Management of Stage I Testicular Cancer," while in the second section, Ms. Maria Theohari presented a case on: "Treatment of Residual Disease After Chemotherapy." The event was followed by an in-depth discussion and analysis with the participation of the attendees and invited commentators, including Mr. Korkolis (Assistant Professor of Surgery, A' Surgical Clinic, G.A.O.N.A. AGIOS SAVVAS), Mr. Koumakis (Coordinator, Director of the B' Pathological Oncology Clinic, G.A.O.N.A. AGIOS SAVVAS), and Mr. Kalogeropoulos (Assistant Professor of Urology, B' Urology Clinic, G.A.O.N.A. AGIOS SAVVAS). The interactive nature of the lesson led to the exchange of views and the drawing of conclusions regarding daily practices in various centers within Greece for testicular cancer. The number of participants reached 23 (see the distribution table*). The presence of younger colleagues, both oncologists and urologists, was dynamic, which reflects the willingness of these specialists for such actions that promote collaboration between the involved specialties. The next lesson, focusing on "Urothelial Cancer," is expected to take place in March 2015. Together with ΟΝΕΟ, we will continue to focus on the ongoing improvement of the content of the courses and the larger participation, primarily from younger colleagues, as they are the main contributors to the success of this initiative.
