Module 2 – Urothelial Cancer

On March 23rd, 2015, the 2nd Lesson on "Urothelial Cancer" of the annual cycle of interactive lessons organized by the Hellenic Research Group of Uro-Genital Cancer (EEOGEK) on urogenital cancers was held at the Small Auditorium of Aretaeio Hospital. The lessons are conducted in collaboration with the New Greek Oncologists Group (ONEO) under the auspices of the Hellenic Society of Pathologists-Oncologists (EPOE).

The event was accredited with 2 Continuing Medical Education credits by the Hellenic Medical Association. Participation was free. The lesson, lasting three hours, included two main sessions. In the first session, a case related to "Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer" was presented by Dr. Christos Kyritsas, Urologist, and in the second session, a case on "Advanced Disease – Urothelial Cancer" was presented by Dr. Sofia Stamatopoulou, Pathologist-Oncologist. Following the presentations, there was an in-depth discussion and analysis with the participation of the attendees and invited commentators, Dr. K. Ntouma, Urologist, Coordinator Director of Urology Clinic, G. Genimatas Hospital, Dr. G. Pissakas, Radiation-Oncologist, Coordinator Director of Radiation Oncology Department, P.G.N.A. ALEXANDRA Hospital, and Dr. Ch. Papadimitriou, Pathologist-Oncologist, Associate Professor at EKPA, Director of the Oncology Unit at Aretaeio Hospital.

The interactive nature of the lesson resulted in an exchange of opinions and the drawing of conclusions regarding daily practices in various centers in Greece concerning urothelial cancer.

The number of participants reached 30 individuals (See the distribution table*). The presence of young colleagues, both oncologists, urologists, and radiation oncologists, was dynamic, which indicates their interest in such actions that promote collaboration among the involved specialties. It is also important to note that HGUCG covered the travel and accommodation expenses of three colleagues from centers outside of Attica, and we hope that the number of supported participants will increase in future sessions.

The next lesson on "Prostate Cancer" is expected to take place in May. Together with ONEO, we will continue to aim for the continuous improvement of the content of the lessons and a larger participation, primarily from young colleagues, as they are key to the success of this initiative.
