Module 3 – Kidney Cancer
On June 22, 2015, the 3rd Lesson on "Kidney Cancer" was held at the Small Amphitheater of the Aretaios Hospital as part of the annual series of interactive lessons organized by the Hellenic Genitourinary Cancer Group (HGUCG) on urogenital cancers. The lessons are conducted in collaboration with the Young Greek Oncologists Group (ONEO), under the auspices of the Hellenic Society of Medical Oncology (HSMO). The event was accredited with 2 Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits by the Hellenic Medical Association. Participation was free. The three-hour lesson included two main sections. In the first section, a case related to "Surgical treatment of a patient with metastatic kidney cancer" was presented by Dr. Panos Mitsos, Urology Resident. In the second section, a case on "Systemic treatment of a patient with metastatic kidney cancer" was presented by Dr. Maria Lyka, Pathologist-Oncologist Resident. During this lesson, we also had the great pleasure and honor of hosting Professor of Urology at the University of Athens, Dr. Dionysios Mitropoulos, who gave a state-of-the-art lecture on "The role of the Urologist in metastatic kidney cancer."
Following, there was an in-depth discussion and analysis with the participation of the attendees and the invited commentators: Dr. Konstantinos Stravodimos, Associate Professor of Urology at the University of Athens, and Dr. Danai Daliani, Pathologist-Oncologist, Director of the Oncology Department at EUROCLINIC ATHENS. The session was moderated by Dr. Aristotelis Bamias, Pathologist-Oncologist, Associate Professor at the University of Athens, and Dr. Athanassios Dellis, Associate Professor of Urology at the University of Athens.
The interactive nature of the lesson resulted in the exchange of views and conclusions regarding daily practices in various centers in Greece for kidney cancer.
The number of participants was 28 (See distribution table*). The presence of young colleagues, both oncologists and urologists, was dynamic, indicating once again the willingness of these professionals to engage in such activities that promote collaboration among the involved specialties. The HGUCG covered the travel and accommodation costs for two colleagues from centers outside Athens, and we hope to increase this number in future sessions.
The next lesson, titled "Prostate Cancer", is scheduled to take place in November 2015. We would like to thank Dr. Tsoukalas and Dr. Voulgaris for their help in organizing the lesson, and HSMO for its support. Together with ONEO, we will continue to focus on continuously improving the lesson content and increasing participation, especially among younger colleagues, as they are the key to the success of this initiative.
